"Chocolate Brownies that Blew Me Away" Paleo

I saw this recipe just last night and decided to make them.  They were good!  Not my kids favorite, but they were much better than other chocolate/cake recipes that I've tried that are paleo friendly.
Here is the link: http://eatdrinkpaleo.com.au/chocolate-brownies-that-blew-me-away/
I grated a regular sweet potato I had at home already.

I did as the author said and used a parchment paper under the brownies. However, I also used heaping tablespoons of the coconut flour so it was a drier mixture.  If you do this, it probably isn't necessary to use the paper.  I also opted for using coconut oil.  Having not used the original choice of olive oil I can't say for certain, but I'm pretty sure this gave it a better flavor.

As you can see, the result is pretty indulgent!

Spicy Turkey Burgers with Roasted Butternut Squash

I found this online a few years back and continue to make it because the flavor is great, it's paleo friendly and my kids love it!

Spicy Turkey Burgers
Ingredients:
20oz ground turkey
1 shredded carrot (I bought pre-shredded and used a good handful)
1/2 shredded zucchini (I use a whole one just make sure to soak up the extra fluid)
2 tsp onion powder
1/2 salt (I used kosher)
1/2 tsp garlic powder
2 tsp chili powder (cayenne for more spice)
1 egg
*you can also add hot sauce to suit your own taste*

I grated my zucchini, you could do this with the carrot as well.  I chose to buy the pre-shredded carrots and just chopped it a little more.  I suggest to let the zucchini sit on a paper towel to soak the excess water off, otherwise it can get too wet.

Add all seasonings, veggies, and meat. in a bowl and mix together.

Form your patties, making sure to not make them too much like a ball, they won't flatten, they will grill like that.

Roasted Butternut Squash
Ingredients:
1 butternut squash
Tablespoon or so (enough to lightly coat the squash) of Olive or Coconut oil
Sea/Kosher salt

I cut the squash the same as I do a pineapple.  I quarter it, put it on its end and slice off the hard skin.

Chop and toss with your choice of oil and salt.  You can add onions to this mixture as well, yummy!

Cover with foil and bake at 450degrees for an hour(+/-).  You can remove foil the last 15minutes to release excess moisture.

I serve the burger on a bed of spinach .

A wooden spoon over a pot makes it impossible to boil over? BUSTED!

I'm sure you've seen it, heard of it, that if you put a wooden spoon over a pot while its boiling it can't boil over.  I am here to tell you that is NOT TRUE.  It will absolutely still boil over.
Here is my example:

I understand the reasoning.  It makes the bubbles pop.  However, the wooden spoon does not pop enough, fast enough.  I will say that it postponed the boiling over but no more.
Sorry Pinteresters!

Homemade Laundry Soap (I write soap specifically because some people really get upset if you say detergent, I suppose that's what they have time worry about?!?!)

So, I keep seeing all these posts about homemade "laundry detergent" and thought it seemed like a good idea.  I read lots of comments and suggestions on many pages and came across many different versions. Liquid/dry, simple/complex, and of course different additives.  I chose to make a dry version because it seemed a lot of the liquid ones you had to let sit overnight when making it and shake before use and so on, too. much. work. I also sort of made my own variation.  I chose to use the following:

1~4lb12oz Box of Borax
1~3lb7oz box of Arm & Hammer super washing soda
1~5lb container of OxiClean
2~bars of Johnson & Johnson baby lavender soap (grated)
2~Bottles of Purex Crystals fabric softener (I picked the blue one, fresh spring waters)
Most "recipes" called for Zote Soap or Fels Naptha, I couldn't find either locally.  I almost bought Ivory soap after quickly googling while still at the store if I could use an alternative soap.  I read that you can,  in fact, if you have sensitive skin you can use an all natural soap.  People have also used an alternative soap after deciding the Fels Naptha did not have a good scent.  I decided there was probably something at home. So, after a quick search of every bathroom cupboard this is what I had.  Two lonely bars of baby lavender soap.  I did more research about what soaps you can use after I mixed mine, I know, before would have been better.  Anyway, I saw that lots of people also use Ivory, the very one I had in my hands! Oh well.  This seemed to work just as well!
Mixing all of the ingredients in layers makes for much easier blending.  Having a 3yr old mix helps a lot too!
I was able to fit ALMOST the entire mixture into the OxiClean tub I had just used and one I had from before along with the Purex Crystal bottles.

Another change I made is I used 5lbs of OxiClean as opposed to 3lbs.  This is simply because I have 3 small children and they have seriously grimy clothing!  I probably could have put 10lbs in. Ha! In fact, the biggest complaint I have read was that after a few months of using homemade "detergent" was that clothes became dingy and somewhat oily.  Also, that VERY dirty clothes weren't getting clean.  For example, mechanics clothing and workout clothes still had a smell. Most "recipes" with these complaints didn't include the POWER of OxiClean :) So this should help.
Below is the water with the laundry soap added. I filled the lid from the Purex Crystals bottle, another Pinteresting tip to get the right amount. I did read that you shouldn't expect to see bubbles.

So, for the first wash I chose my husbands work shirts and socks. I also threw in a blanket that seems to always come out staticy so I could test to see how everything would work in the dryer without a dryer sheet.  Believe me, this was a good test for my new awesome laundry "detergent".
So, after a couple of minutes of the mixing, I must admit, it smelled amazing! I was already liking this great idea of "mine"!
The results were GREAT!  My husband's work shirts and socks seemed very clean and smelled awesome, much improved from when they went it the washer. :)  The blanket was mostly free of static and was very soft.
I definitely think this is a good decision.  Why not save money?!  I will still be using bleach and a spray on for dirty spots when necessary.  Some people say they switched back to detergent because they had to do this.  Really though, I always needed that no matter what detergent I had!
 Happy Washing!
Thanks again Pinteresters!

A Star Wars Adventure ~Gabe's 3rd Birthday!

So, my middle child Gabe, wanted a Star Wars birthday party.  I decide that this is totally doable and I start pinteresting the heck out of "star wars birthday", "star wars party", "star wars party favors", "star wars cakes", you get the idea :)  So here we are 2 days before the party and I had pinned GALORE, but had we prepared ahead of time, no. So off I went and bought everything to cook, bake, and decorate!  I got busy in the kitchen and my husband made the decorations.

Yoda Soda and Jedi Juice
Bow-ba Fett Pasta, Tatooine Storm troopers,  and ewok treats.  I also had Jabba the Hut in a blanket.
 Princess Lays
 Padawan Popcorn
 Obi-Wan Kabobies and Jabba Jigglers

Gabe wanted a BLUE cake.  Trying to figure out how to make this intertwine with the Star Wars theme was a little challenging.  There is a part of the second movie that is "wintery" so I went with that and made ice crystals hanging down the side.  Here is the recipe I used for the fondant: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Rolling-Fondant/Detail.aspx?event8=1&prop24=SR_Thumb&e11=fondant&e8=Quick%20Search&event10=1&e7=Home%20Page
Of course you have to give away party favors at a 3yr olds party!
Thanks for coming, you were a trooper!

It turned out wonderfully, thanks Pinteresters!
